Report of meeting held on 14th March 2012
A report on IoR Midlands Regional Meeting held on March 14th at Chateau Impney, Droitwich, Worcs.
This meeting was held in this spectacular building built in the style of a French chateau by a former salt baron who built it as a present for his new French wife (she is believed to have left him shortly after).
The IoR meeting was called to pilot and trial a different meeting format which featured:
• A daytime meeting (2.00pm - 5.00pm) to allow more members to attend.
• Two CPD presenting companies to potentially double the attraction and interest for attendees.
• A reduced IoR business element.
• Reduced meeting notification lead times (long lead times have had a negative effect in the past).
If the meeting format proves successful it may be used for future IoR National Roadshows.
17 people were in attendance and the room which I had selected made for a lively and informative meeting.
The two CPD presenting companies were:
Peter Cox Property Services Ltd - The UK market leader in rising damp, damp proofing, waterproofing, timber preservation and wall stabilisation.
Their local Manager, Michael Cullen gave a very interesting presentation, the emphasis being on roof timber preservation, illustrated with graphic images and samples of timber decay, wet rot, dry rot, infestation and treatment.
Michael’s presentation was well received and informative literature was handed out to all attendees.
Contact details of attendees were provided to Peter Cox who will soon be sending out CPD Certificates.
Stroma Certification (Government and UKAS Approved)
Stuart Oakes presented on 'The Green Deal' - A co-ordinated approach to Building Sustainability & Compliance.
'The Green Deal' was introduced by the Government in Nov 2011. Stuart explained what The Green Deal is and its implications for the attendees.
He outlined energy efficiencies in new and existing domestic buildings, Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) and explained the jargon! SAP, MCS, ECO.CERT, Part 'L', CPS (Competent Persons Scheme) etc.
Stuart went on to explain that The Energy Act (Oct. 2011) will require a minimum level of energy efficiency from April 2018. Therefore increased commercial opportunities may exist and attendees were advised to ‘stay ahead of the game.’
Stroma, who have recently become sponsors of the IoR will also be sending out CPD certificates to the attendees.
Questions from the floor were numerous and impassioned!
The meeting concluded with a small element of IoR business and although the pilot was generally a success, I perhaps should have given a little more time to this and increased the time between notification of the meeting and it actually taking place.
One delegate, John Dodd of Marley, asked if it would be possible to obtain a few images from the presentations. I have passed this request to the presenting companies.
