Scottish Regional Minutes 3rd March 2011 at The Q Club, Glasgow

This committee meeting was planned to take place prior to the arrival of members for our Pool Evening, which was kindly organised and sponsored by Eric Donnelly FIoR.

It was apparent before the meeting that turnout for this event was extremely low, with only seven participating members expected, including those on the committee.

In light of this, Scottish Region Chair, Matthew Fry offered to send out a letter to members in an attempt to clarify why the turnout was so low at an event that was expected by all to encourage more members to come along.

Plans were also made for future meetings, which will be more roofing-orientated. It is intended to hold a meeting on Thursday 2nd June 2011 and a further meeting on Thursday 1st September 2011. Regional funds are very low at present and hosting a meeting may be out with the financial capabilities of the Regional Committee. Sponsorship for future meetings will, therefore be essential.

SIG will sponsor the September meeting, with a presentation on the new Part L / Part J Building Regulations and their impact on the Roofing Industry.

The next two meetings may possibly take place at Broadwood Stadium, Cumbernauld or Falkirk Stadium. These central locations may prove more convenient to members and encourage them to come along to these events.

It was proposed that members could offer to provide their current contact details to keep track of e-mail addresses.

Methods of introducing more prospective members were discussed. It was confirmed that firms can encourage their employees to join, entering at Member level with an update to fellow via CV after their five-year activity at this level. Interest has also been received from companies who have no members, rules have been relaxed regarding senior management entering as fellows.

Bob Couts of Telford College had asked Matthew at what level time-served apprentices would enter the Institute. Alex Owens confirmed that they would enter as Associates.

Telford College is to host the IoR course in the east with the possibility of Glasgow College of Building & Printing in the west. Alex mentioned Caledonian Uni as another potential venue for the course of the west.

It was suggested that we talk to the NFRC committee in Scotland regarding joined-up membership between both organisations. Alex Owens advised that NFRC members should have IoR employees according to competent the roofer programme.

End of Meeting.
