North West Meeting

Midland's Regional Meeting
Midland Region is holding the next meeting in early April. The subject of discussion is:
'Improving the reliability of the roofs we design and build’.
The main presenter will be:
Keith Roberts BSc CEng MICE MIStructE MAE Roberts Consulting, (who has a regular column in RCi)
This will be a very stimulating discussion generating much thought for us, the 'leaders in roofing professionalism'!

Would you like to help the Institute?
Due to circumstances we find ourselves without the full quota of Board members for the Institute.
Not the end of the world I hear you say! True, but we do want to have as wide a coverage of the country as we can and would welcome names of potential Board of Govenors from all regions, especially the North West.

L.I.o.R course opportunity
Once again Redland have agreed to run a course for the Institute of Roofing at their training Centre at South Cerney.
The course will be over a ten week period of ten training days, leading to the qualification of Licentiate, Institute of Roofing.
This course is one of the most successful in the country, of its type having already generated over 60 newly qualified members of the rofing industry.

Midland Regional Meeting
After the second very successful Regional meeting in the Midlands when 30+ members attended it is intended to have the next meeting early in 2010
A technical discussion on 'meeting the needs of roofing systems as we move into the next decade' will be topic discusssed which you will be able to add to your CPD history!

Search begins for new President
As you will see in the next edition of the Institute's Bulletin, our President, Lord Glentoran has sadly decided to retire for the role of President.
Lord Glentoran has been a great friend to our Institute and worked on our half in any capacity that he or we felt would benefit our Institute.
We now must turn our thoughts to his successor, this is not going to be an easy task!
We will keep you informed andlet you know what your Board does and have no doubt, Lord Glentoran's successor will have a lot to live up to ......................but that person is out there, we just have to find them!

AGM in York 2009 - so what happened?
Unable to make it to the Annual General Meeting held in York? Have a look at the information that was issued telling members what happened in your Institute over the last year. All these details can be viewed on line on the AGM page.
Hopefully you will be able to come to the 2010 which is going to be held in a great location - more later next year!

Opportunities to train?
Nationally there are a number of Regional Roof Training Groups. These are working towards a trained workforce for the roofing industry.
As a manager you may have to find training for your employees that is demanded by a main contractor or fall under your legal responsibilities in health and safety.
We hope that you will find details for training locally will save you time in researchiong the requried training

Publishing members on the web site?
We are sometimes asked if a person is a member of the Institute.
At the Board meeting held on 14th October 2009 it was agreed to promote our members of the Institute on a wider basis, if that was our members wish.
We would like to ensure that your membership of the Institute is readily availabe to any organisation who may wish to qualify your status. Would you object to this being done for you?

Midlands Regional Meeting

Regional questionaires
Much is being done to try to find out what you, our members want and expect from the Insitute of Roofing.
We have had a number of meetings in the Regions, not very well attended, have offered to have golf days, not well supported, held CPD events, again not well supported.
Currently the Midlands, South West, Eastern Region and Scotland are trying to find out what you, our members want.
If you do not tell us we will again need to review the structure of the Regional bodies and how we can provide what you, the members want.
Contact the London office to receive your questionaire from your Region to help us make your Institute work better for you.

Funding for qualifications
We are often asked if we know of any support for those who attend Licentiate and Associate Courses held by approved Institute of Roofing training providers.

The Institute is about to embark on the process of mapping our Fellow status to that of an NVQ 4.
Do you feel that you are and should be acknowledged as qualified to NVQ level 4 ( Degree level)?

Health and Safety Executive news
Be Part of the Solution
HSE has announced that its guidance will now be given away free of charge online, in order to help employers, safety representatives and workers manage health and safety in the workplace more effectively.
Around 250 priced publications, containing safety advice, Approved Codes of Practice (APoPS) and guidance on regulations will be made available to download in pdf format from September 2009 onwards.
Initially, 100 of the most popular titles will be released, with the remainder added by March 2010.
HSE made the announcement at the launch of its new strategy, Be Part of the Solution, which sets out its approach to reducing illness and injury at work.

Congratulations to all who have been successful in the Institute's Licentiate examination!
Two very successful courses have just been completed.
Liquid Plastics Ltd and Imperial Consultants Ltd, both based in Lancashire, have achieved successful completions of their course work with success in the exams at Licentiate level.
