North East Region - 13th July 2011
Minutes
The North West region meeting was held on Wednesday 13th July at 6.00pm at The Bridge Hotel, Nr Wetherby, Yorkshire LS22 5HS.
1 – Martin Adwick welcomed all to the meeting the first in the NE Region since 2008. He explained how one of the main drives of the Institute is to regenerate the regions and hopefully involve more members.
2 – Martin explained the current set up of the Institute, how head office ran and who did what, he explained the role of the Board of Governor and the sub committees they serve on and what the function of the committees are.
3 – Martin went on to discuss what the Institute was currently involved with and how this affected the members. The meeting heard how the board wished to increase the membership, what benefits were available, the development of Distance learning and implementation of CPD logs.
4 – Martin described the current aims of the Institute of getting more membership precipitation and ultimately achieving Chartered Status.
5 – The meeting then became a general discussion on the previous items and the following topics and ideas were suggested.
Terry Chiswell and John Pegg were happy to assist in organising meetings for the NE regions with back up from Head Office.
It was felt that venue was important for the meeting as this would raise interest from the membership. Suggested venues were the Black Sheep Brewery, Sandtoft and Dave Taylor of TATA offer any of their factories with a tour of the steelworks after.
Rodney Cooke suggested that we could Tag onto one of the NFRC meetings if we wished and Denise Cherry suggested that we could hold a meeting in conjunction the Yorkshire Roof Training Group. Rodney said he would be happy to liaise with the Institute to tie up with the NFRC regional AGM at the Railway Museum in York, 26 April 2012.
CPD logs and the checking of the logs by head office was discussed and the meeting felt that the members would need to have notice that the logs would be called for so they could get them in order.
The meeting discussed the CPD seminars provided by manufacturers and felt that it would be a good idea for head office hold a list of these companies to assist regional meetings.
In order to encourage young persons into the Institute it was felt that the Institute could offer 1 year free affiliate membership to the winners of Skill build and that we should have a presence at the Skill build hall. Skill Build is in LEEDS 14 – 16 September 2011.
6 – The next meeting is to be arranged in September 2011 and we are to try to organise the meeting with a trip to Skill build in Leeds.
7 – The guest Speaker was Dave Taylor, Business Development Manager with TATA Steels. Dave gave a CPD seminar on Part L 2010: The role or the Building envelope in compliance for buildings other than dwelling. This was an excellent presentation which was easy to understand and it prompted a lively question and answer session. Dave left a flyer of the other CPD seminars they run and offered to hold any meetings at their Steelworks or premises thought out the UK.
CPD Certificates will be sent out to all attendees.
The meeting finished about 8.30pm and Martin thanked Dave for his presentation and all the members who turn up for the meeting.
