3. Chairman’s Report
It has and continues to be a challenging time for companies in the roofing sector which naturally has had a knock on effect with their ability to undertake training. However, the Group has been able to provide training programmes and support for members, as I am sure Brian will expand upon.
I would like to bring to your attention some new courses that will be offered at South Coat Roof Training. From 2nd December the Heritage Roofing NVQ will be piloted and at present there are six candidates being registered, the maximum number being 8. The centre in Littlehampton has just been awarded IIBT status as a Health and Safety Test Centre and can offer up to 13 programmes across all sectors of construction, including managers and supervisors tests.
Early in the New Year, solar courses will be available at the Littlehampton centre. We have support from Solar Century, Velux, Worcester Bosch and Veridian.
The above is in addition to regular courses offered: Lead, Health and Safety, Construction Diploma for apprentices, NVQ level 2 and 3 OSAT in Roof Slating and Tiling and NVQ level 2 OSAT in Applied Waterproof Membranes. We have several candidates from companies within the training group area participating in these programmes now.
In conclusion, I feel that with the wide range of training available to the group members and expressions of interest shown to date, we will be able to fully meet members and others training requirements in the year ahead, as hopefully the economic situation gradually improves.
4. Training Officers Report
Group Training officer Report
Firstly, I would like to thank all the members who have taken time out of their busy schedules and turned up today to give their support to the Group and the award winner.
Well, not surprising, this has not been a year where training was foremost on members’ minds, with training grants being cut and train to gain funding becoming evermore difficult to obtain. Surprisingly through the difficulty of it all many companies are still aware that training is important and although we have lost some group members we have also gained new members.
So what have we achieved? I am pleased to say that we have actively visited the introduced the training group to all existing and new members, advising and assisting where require on training needs, training plans, grants and National Vocation Qualification.
We have registered 40 OSAT candidates for National Vocation Qualification Level 2 in roofing occupations, Roof Slating and Tiling, Applied Waterproof Membranes and Mastic Asphalt. With achievements in excess of 73% this figure would have been higher but with the current work load of some companies and the delegates are not employed on works that will give the assessors chance to observe and assess the performance criteria or have left the industry. I am disappointed that the Train to Gain funding has been withdrawn with no clear view of a return in the near future.
I am pleased to say we have met the targets set at the beginning of the year.

- First Aid Appointed Person
