Mr Howard Evans- Chair of The Midlands Region of the Institute of Roofing presided the recent Midlands Regional Meeting of the IoR at Strawberry Bank, Meridan on the 27th April 2017.
Unfortunately a number of apologies were given on the day but 16 members and guests enjoyed an entertaining morning being educated and entertained by our 2 Guest speakers.
Martyn James- a Development Underwriter at Hiscox Insurance educated attendees on the threat of cyber attacks to business and what can be done to reduce this. 80 % of all cyber attacks can be prevents by implementing basic security controls.
The average cost of a cyber attack to a large business in the UK now stands at £36,500 with the most severe attacks costing millions as revealed by the governments Cyber Security breaches survey 2016. Cyber crime has been on the increase over the last 5 years and the survey also estimated that 65% of large firms detected a cyber security breach over a 12 month period with 25% of these firms experiencing a breach at least once a month.
The five most consistently reported types of crime are asset misappropriation, bribery and corruption. Procurement fraud and accounting fraud. Today more than ever, it is imperative that businesses do everything in their power to limit their exposure to these risks and mitigate the cost of damages.
Martyn also updated members on the upcoming data protection laws which all employers need to be aware of and the fines associated with breaching this.
Institute of Roofing Midlands Chair and Vice Chair Howard and Kate of SPV also participated in this session as having recently encountered a cyber-attack and being fully aware of the considerable implications to a business
Vice Chair Kate Whatley commented “Having experienced a cyber-attack recently and having firsthand experience of the considerable implications this had to our business, we wanted to ensure that people are fully aware of the threat of cybercrime and ensure they put measures in place to prevent this happening to them.”
Following a short break for tea and coffee and bacon rolls, Lyndon Pick of the Barnsley Safety Company offered a short presentation on Working at Height, assessing safe roof access and various solutions for this.
Kay Rose- one of the members of The Board of the Institute of Roofing, reminded all attendees to ensure that their subscriptions were up to date.
Howard then closed the meeting and asked members to ensure feedback was provided so we can ensure we are offering the members informative and interesting CPD and events which are relevant to their businesses.
